Message from the President

Sharon L. Bradley, IENA President

I took some time to review the 2006-2007 IENA newsletters, which verified how busy the last year has been...

October 17, 2006: Legislative Reception at the Red Lion River Inn. Several candidates discussed their views on topics, such as healthcare insurance and access to care.

Forty-seven of your fellow IENA members and nursing students from both ICN and SCC spent that evening at the IENA Legislative Reception at the Red Lion River Inn. In addition to eating some really yummy appetizers and buying raffle tickets to support IENA's Scholarship Fund, we had the chance to listen to incumbents and candidates for federal, state and local offices talk about how to address the large numbers of people without health insurance and the unmet needs of people with mental illnesses (Kay Johnson, 2006).

March 2007: Issues, priorities, and goals 2005-2007 were reviewed and the Board of Directors agreed that we were on target.

April 17, 2007: Spring Gala at the Red Lion River Inn.

This year's Spring Gala event was a wonderful evening for members to reconnect, acknowledge award winners and visit, as well as giving the students that attended a chance to see IENA in action. The theme for this year was "Care for the Caregivers." The event was capped off by speaker Karen Wright. In addition to award and scholarship presentations, several door prizes were awarded to attendees (June, 2007).

We are currently planning the October 16, 2007 Legislative Reception to be held at the Red Lion River Inn. The Nurse Practitioner Group of Spokane (NPGS) (http://www.npgs.org/) is joining IENA in the educational event, and CE’s will be offered.

I have enjoyed this year, working with energetic and innovative District 4 nurses leaders. After the Legislative Reception, I will pass leadership to Terry Buxton RN PhD, who will lead IENA for 2007-2008. Many new and exciting ideas are being generated to continually improve IENA, and we hope you will join us.

Sharon L. Bradley MSN RN (Sheri)
IENA President, 2006-2007

MEET YOUR BOARD

Michelle Slider RNC, MSN, Director-at-Large 06-08

I have enjoyed serving this nursing community this year on the Board of IENA. The opportunity to be a change agent and offer service to the profession has been very rewarding. I look forward to this next year and the experiences that we will share as Health Care in our region continues to change.

I am happy to share a little bit about myself and my nursing path with you. I have been a Spokane girl my entire life. I lived "abroad" in Seattle for a year, but came home when it was time to buy a house and raise children. I was a South Hill child (Joel E. Ferris HS) and am now a Wandemere adult. For everyone who calls Spokane home I'm sure you know what a big change that is.

  • I am an alumnus of ICNE/EWU (BSN) and Gonzaga University (MSN).

  • I was an Inpatient OB nurse (certified) for 19 years (17 at Holy Family Hospital).

  • I am an instructor at ICN/WSU. I teach physical assessment seminar and work with senior practicum students.

  • I am a systems analyst for IRM and build computer documentation screens for use by nurses and ancillary staff in Washington, Idaho, and California.

  • I served for two years on the Board of the local chapter-at-large of Sigma Theta Tau

I hope we have an opportunity to visit at the functions sponsored by IENA this year.

DID YOU KNOW?

ANA is pleased to offer these online continuing education independent study modules (ISMs) to nurses who are interested in broadening their skills, knowledge, and abilities in the changing field of health care. By completing these ISMs, nurses will be able to:

  • Earn continuing nursing education contact hours.

  • Meet mandatory requirements for license renewal, certification, or promotion in their workplace.

  • Pursue their career goals within the profession.

The planning, implementation, and evaluation of ANA's Continuing Nursing Education activities are guided by the following:

  • ANA's Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development (2002R). The American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation Manual for Accreditation of Continuing Nursing Education 2006

  • ANA's Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretative Statements (2001)

The American Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

ANAN's Goals the Independent Study Modules (ISM):

  1. To enable the participants to learn and retain knowledge by selecting this method of participation through completion of the ISM at their own pace, within their own time frame, and at the computer location of their own choice.

  2. To engage the participants more fully through:

  • Self-testing and immediate correction of the test.

  • Providing immediate feedback by explaining the rationale for the correct response to each test question.

  • Permitting re-reading of the article and re-taking the test as many times as necessary until a pass grade of 75% or more is achieved.

  • Requesting their evaluation of the ISM.

  1. To immediately provide the Continuing Nursing Education Attendance and Contact Hour Certificate to participants who successfully complete the ISM so they can meet their professional goals and the requirements of their employer, professional association, and credentialing and licensing boards.

  2. To assure that the content of the ISM is current, relevant, and important to nursing as a profession, individual nurses in different practice roles, specialties, and settings. and to ANA.
