June 2007

District 4, Volume 6, Issue #5

In this Issue:

Message from the President

Sharon L. Bradley, IENA PresidentNational Nurses Week 2007 was celebrated from May 6 (National Nurses Day) through May 12 (Florence Nightingale's birthday). The National theme was "Nursing: A Profession and a Passion" (ANA, http://www.ana.org).

Our Inland Empire Nurses Association also took time to celebrate nursing on April 17th at the Red Lion River Inn in Spokane. The event was free, and those who attended enjoyed wonderful food, drink, and conversation with other nurses, nursing students, family and friends. Jana Gardner and Sheri Hanson won a contest to name the 2008 Spring Event "Nurses' Night Out - R & R" (Recognition & Rewards). They both won $5 gift certificates to Starbucks for selecting the winning theme.

Nursing Excellence Awards went to Janet Toone for Lifetime Achievement, and Debbie Brinker for Nursing Leadership. Additionally, scholarships were awarded to Michele Wolf and Jana Gardner.

Karen Wright (http://www.writeminded.com) provided a motivational talk that challenged us all to reach below the surface, to recognize, value and improve our responses to life happenings. "Purpose: My vision, Possibility: My choices, and Passion: My connection" was the basis of her message, as she encouraged all to be confident and proud of daily actions and choices.

The IENA Board of Directors and I encourage all of you to make a choice to attend IENA events next year. It is a great opportunity to share in our diverse nursing community. The Board of Directors takes a break from meetings during the summer, and then we begin again in the fall. We have positions open, so think about joining the fun next year. Call our office at 509-328-8288 and let Colleen know you are interested in helping our District 4 membership to be strong.

Have a great summer! Hope to hear from you soon.

Sharon L. Bradley MSN RN (Sheri)
IENA President, 2006-2007

HRSA has just posted the application for the FY 2007 Nursing Scholarships. Through this program, nursing school students can receive scholarships to pay for their tuition and fees, as well as a $1,200/ month stipend. Upon graduation, these nurses must work full-time in a facility deemed to have a critical shortage of nurses for at least 2 years (some will have a longer service commitment).

For information, go to HRSA.

Applications must be received by HRSA by June 30, 2007.
