In this Issue:
This October, just before the general election, IENA again hosted its annual Legislative Evening. Area candidates running for legislative, congressional, and County Commissioner offices were invited to attend an evening of questions and answers regarding health care issues. What ensued was an illuminating and lively discussion between the candidates and nurses practicing in a variety of areas including public health, acute care, the VA, nursing education, and a large number of students from ICN. The discussion was so invigorating that we hope to continue it this February 2009 when we brave the cold, snow, and closed passes to travel to Olympia for Nurse Legislative Day (visit the Events page for more details).
During the first week of November the new Board of Directors met for the first time. A number of new faces were gathered around the table to blend in with those of us who have continuing appointments and some who are departing board members. We have a great team of people this year who are committed to serving you, our valued members. Our monthly meetings are not exclusive events however, and we invite you to attend one of them. Meetings are generally held the first Monday of the month starting at 5:30 PM. We'd like to think that we have all the answers, and maybe we do if we don't have input from you. If spending time in another meeting is not possible, then send us an e-mail about your thoughts. We're ready to listen.
Unfortunately, we had to cancel our planned CNE program but the good news is we are in the process of re-scheduling it to give everyone enough advanced notice for planning purposes. The information we hope to present is timely and relevant to all nurses regardless of where you practice. Please watch for the dates and details to earn 6 hours of CNE.
Lastly, we are in the planning stages of celebrating our IENA Centennial here in Spokane. It promises to be a great celebration of our history and the progress we have made as an organization and a profession over the past 100 years. Again, watch for details as they emerge from our ever important newsletter and web site.
Best wishes throughout the Holiday Season!
Terry Buxton, RN, Ph.D. IENA President, 2008-09

Event sponsored by the Inland Empire Nurses Association (IENA).
IENA held its annual Legislative Reception on October 14, 2008 at the Red Lion River Inn, Spokane. As in the past there was not a charge for members. The evening consisted of a "no host" bar a buffet dinner, and a Q&A with invited speakers.
Speakers for the night included legislative representatives from the Local, State and Federal level.
Each attendee received a 2009 pocket calendar inscribed with "Complements of the Inland Empire Nurses Association" in addition to other small gifts of thanks for attending.
The night was capped off with a Q&A with the audience. Each legislator was given a short amount of time to present their views on Health Care prior to the Q&A. It was very successful evening and the attendees praised the open forum of the Q&A. A total of ten legislators attended the event and participated in the Q&A.

As a recipient of a 2007 IENA nursing scholarship, I have had the opportunity to enhance myself professionally, personally, and academically. As a full-time student, the scholarship has given me the ability to dedicate myself entirely to my nursing studies.
Currently, I am a full-time graduate student in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Washington State University. My academic goal is to graduate from the program in December 2009. In February 2009, I will be traveling to Ecuador on a two week medical mission. The mission is an internship program through WSU. The trip will provide me with a wonderful opportunity to better my skills while caring for indigenous people. In December 2008, I was inducted as a member of Sigma Theta Thau Nursing Honor Society. (Amy Cutler).
Along with my studies, I work as a clinical nurse instructor at Spokane Community College and as a supplemental nurse on the nephrology unit at Sacred Heart Medical Center. I also serve on the nominations committee for IENA.
Sincerely, Michele Wolfe, RN, BSN
